ULTIMATE ASS KICKING

"This next song's called 'Ultimate Ass Kicking'. It's not so much about kicking ass, as getting your ass kicked"

BEYOND SHADOWS

Stinking Lizaveta, live! Tomorrow night! Not sold out!

'With irons in the fires of Black Sabbath, Sonny Sharrock, King Crimson and Slint, the Stinking Lizaveta sound corresponds its crunch with an improvisational largess. Still, it's grounded by the all-encompassing Morelli bass swell, the tar-thick, body-heaving beats, the manic, morose wall of guitar whose wrigglings are stoic and thrashing in a most argumentative fashion. There may be more wah, more drums and more pain on 'Caught Between Worlds'. But the band remains true to its aim.
"Life has gotten harder. So have we," says Agusta. "Ten years is long enough for the atoms in our body to have been replaced two times, but we still play a lot of the same songs. Just never the same way twice."
"It's a hard road, motherfucker," says Yanni when asked if recording is secondary to touring. Record labels—even the smallest—are fragile enterprises. "Labels come and go like the winter snow," says Agusta with hints of both sarcasm and weariness.
One constant is that they still confuse audiences with their diffident tones, spaces and corrosion. Coming long before the equally abrasive Sunno and Fucking Champs, they get called all sorts of names. Punks call them hippies. Hippies call them metalheads. Metalheads call them prog. Prog rockers call them punks. "We are doom jazz!" exclaims Agusta.'

THIS IS THE LIFE WE CHOSE

Here's a picture of Jon Chapple in a white boiler suit.

Jon played a cover of Johnny Cash's 'Boy Named Sue', sang a Carter Family song through the skin of a snare drum held in front of his face, and closed the set with a tearing, Shellacesque number that bodes very nicely for whatever you might be hoping for. Will the suit stay? Place your bets.

Thanks also to Big Joan and Vialka: the former, a tight, percussive math-rock ensemble that would seem rather stern and masculine, were you to ignore Annette Becker, a statuesque Germanic frontwoman who reels trance-like around the stage, screams into a telephone receiver and plays a conviniently-placed dustbin with drumsticks; the latter, a frenzied avant-jazz fantasy sprung from the loins of a drunken, wispy-bearded Cossack and a cranberry-sipping, Madonna-miked anarchist milkmaid, criss-crossing the world with nothing but two Interrail tickets, a guitar, and pile of gleaming cymbals - Vialka, we salute you, and hope you come back soon.

THE BORED AND THE BORING

All set for Vialka on Wednesday? We are. Someone over at the Plan B forum saw them. It's always good to offer another opinion other than your own. Doors open at 8pm, with a solo Jon Chapple hitting the stage sometime shortly after.

OTHER THINGS: Visit the website of Mr Chapple's new country night here. Listen to Gunchester grime outfit (and May-time Lesson No.1 guests) Virus Syndicate here. Buy tickets for the Green Man here (Joanna Newsom is playing, but don't tell anyone because it still seems to be a bit of a secret). Did we remember to point to to a Stinking Lizaveta MP3? No, we nearly didn't, but here it is: it's called 'Out Of Breath' and it's a typical example of their full-on math stoner excellence.

That's all for now. See you Wednesday.

WHIPPING BOYS

Coachwhips are kicking the fuck out of the UK: eyewitness accounts here and here, and there's even an 8/10 album review in this week's NME. If you still haven't heard them, listen to 'Made A Bomb' here.

Ah, I think we forgot to say, but the opening band this Sunday (in the absence of Bristol's Steveless) will be the mighty Gindrinker, described thus: "Doom-metal guitar, improv coronet, and the liver-swollen bile of The Fall circa 'Hex Enduction Hour' takes shape in the hands of glowering Cardiff publicans". This will be their third gig. Come give it up.
